Micromax Confirms Infinity Smartphone Series Launch on August 22

Micromax has started sending ‘Block your Date’ invitations to media for a launch event on August 22 where the company is expected to reveal the all-new Infinity series. Micromax, taking a page out of Samsung’s book, is likely to launch multiple phones in its Infinity range to counter the high-end Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

The teaser image sent by the domestic handset maker confirms that the new Micromax Infinity series will sport a display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The teaser has a tagline that says, “Let’s put a number to infinity” along with the India launch date and the smartphone’s image.

Micromax Confirms Infinity Smartphone Series Launch on August 22Looking at the image, it seems that the Micromax Infinity smartphone series will have all phones with slim bezels, and may be targeted at users who like to watch a lot of multimedia on their devices. There’s no home button at the front, and it seems that the entire Infinity range will feature on-screen navigation button.

For the uninitiated, Micromax’s Infinity series won’t be the first which tries to bring the large screen design to consumers at a budget. Recently, LG launched its Q6 smartphone with FullVision Display in India at Rs. 14,990. The biggest highlight of the LG Q6 is its 5.5-inch FullVision display that sports taller-than-usual aspect ratio of 18:9 and has curved edges. The smartphone also comes with face unlock feature.

Apart from the Infinity series, Micromax is also set to soon debut the all-new Evok Dual smartphone, which it has been teasing for some time.

Chinese Brands Hold 48 Percent Smartphone Market Share Globally: Counterpoint

While overall global smartphone shipments grew 3 percent Year-over-Year (YoY) reaching 365 million units in the second quarter of 2017, Chinese brands have emerged as the dominant force, making a dent in Apple’s market share, a report said on Wednesday.

According to the market research firm Counterpoint Research, Chinese smartphone brands marked a record 48 percent market share worldwide with India, South Asia and Africa remaining as key focus geographies.

Xiaomi (60 percent), Vivo (45 percent), Oppo (33 percent) and Huawei (20 percent) were the fastest growing brands with increasing overseas smartphones shipments (YoY).

“Chinese brands have been successful in not only cementing their positions in their home country but also managing to expand beyond mainland China at the same time,” said Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Counterpoint Research, in a statement.

“They have backed their channel strategies with aggressive marketing spend in both above-the-line and below-the-line campaigns,” he added.

china world growth counterpoint counterpoint

According to Counterpoint, these brands will continue to expand their reach beyond China during the second half of this year.

Samsung led the smartphone market by volume with a market share of 22 percent. However, its shipments recorded only a marginal growth of 4 percent annually during the quarter.

Apple’s global smartphone market share declined due to seasonality.

On Tuesday, Apple revealed third quarter results, saying iPhone sales were up 1.6 percent to 41.03 million. The Cupertino-based tech giant sold 40.4 million iPhones a year earlier.

“Demand for older generation iPhones remained strong in markets like Russia, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and other fast-growing markets,” Pathak noted.

“Many users are likely to delay their purchase of a new iPhone in anticipation of the much awaited iPhone 10th anniversary edition which is expected to be a super-cycle for Apple – though supply-side challenges might limit the initial volumes available,” he added.

Apple’s decline in China continues as Oppo, Vivo and Huawei posted record Q2 2017 shipments in the country.

Global Smartphone Sales Drop Despite Growth by Top Five Makers: IDC

Global smartphone sales saw a modest decline in the second quarter of 2017, as market leaders Samsung and Apple consolidated their positions, a survey showed Wednesday.

The IDC survey showed South Korean giant Samsung maintaining the top spot by delivering some 79.8 million handsets for a 23.3 percent market share.

Apple held onto the number two spot with a 12 percent share after delivering 41 million iPhones.

Samsung and Apple both slightly increased their market share compared with a year earlier, increasing sales 1.4 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively, IDC said.

Huawei was the third largest vendor, with an 11.3 percent market share. The Chinese electronics giant closed the gap with Apple with 19.6 percent unit sales growth, adding two percentage points to market share from a year earlier, according to the survey.

Chinese manufacturers Oppo and Xiaomi rounded out the top five with a market share of 8.1 and 6.2 percent, respectively.

Global Smartphone Sales Drop Despite Growth by Top Five Makers: IDCIDC said that while overall sales were lower than a year earlier, the top five smartphone vendors showed positive growth while declines were seen for other manufacturers.

“It’s no secret that the smartphone market is a very challenging segment for companies to maintain or grow share, especially as already low average selling prices declined by another 4.3 percent in 2016,” said IDC analyst Ryan Reith.

“The smaller, more localized vendors will continue to struggle, especially as the leading volume drivers build out their portfolio into new markets and price segments.”

The survey comes ahead of the anticipated release of new handsets from Apple and Samsung as well as other makers for the holiday season.

Apple managed to boost iPhone sales from the same period a year ago despite intense speculation about the 10th anniversary edition of the popular device.

But Apple has lost ground in the Chinese market, with revenues down 10 percent from a year earlier in its “Greater China” segment.

LG V30 Confirmed to Sport 6-Inch FullVision P-OLED QHD+ Display

LG is set to launch the much rumoured LG V30 smartphone soon, and new information about the smartphone keeps trickling in regularly. In fresh reports, LG has now confirmed that the company is making the switch to OLED in its upcoming flagship, which will sport a FullVision display – meaning really less bezel. Also, more spec information about the smartphone has been leaked revealing its display size and camera details.

LG has now confirmed that its next flagship, highly rumoured to be the LG V30, will switch to OLED with a QHD+ (1440 x 2880 pixels) resolution. This means more battery life and durability. The company also says that the plastic OLED aka P-OLED display tech will allow for curved edges on the sides, but the shared image showing the bottom part of the smartphone suggests that it won’t copy Samsung’s Edge feature, and the display will only be slightly tapered.

The LG V30 display will take on the 18:9 FullVision aspect ratio, just like the LG G6, and the company says it will cover 109 percent of the DCI-P3 colour space and support HDR10 as well. LG also says that the upper and lower bezels have been reduced by 20 to 50 percent, despite the upcoming flagship being lower in overall form size than last year’s LG V20. The logo, LG confirms, has also been moved to the back panel.

Commenting on the impending launch, LG Electronics Mobile Communications President Juno Cho said, “Expertise in OLED has long been a core competency of LG, and the technology has always been seen as a potential value-add for smartphones. With competition in the global smartphone space fiercer now than ever, we felt that this was the right time to reintroduce OLED displays in our mobile products.”

LG V30 Confirmed to Sport 6-Inch FullVision P-OLED QHD+ DisplayAndroid Authority also shared some exclusive information about the LG V30 smartphone, particularly about the second screen seen on the predecessors. It claims that the secondary display is being ditched, in favour of a new ‘floating bar’. It essentially will provide quick access to notifications, shortcuts, and other things; however details on how it will look and work were scarce. The report also states that the LG V30 may sport Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and Daydream support. As per the report, the camera on the LG V30 will have an f/1.6 aperture, Crystal Clear Glass Lens, and “improved transmittance”. It will also have an improved audio experience, military standard protection, IP68 water resistance, and better cooling management.

Separately, an outline sketch of the LG V30 has also been leaked recently. In the image, claimed to be extracted from the user manual, the smartphone is set to have a bezel-less design, no home button, a horizontal dual camera setup at the back located in the centre, a fingerprint sensor right below it, and the LG logo at the bottom.

Previous reports suggest that the LG V30 may be offered in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage capacities, and the dimensions could measure at 151.4×75.2×7.4mm. The smartphone has been tipped to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and house a 3200mAh battery.

The LG V30 smartphone is expected to be announced on August 31 with US pre-orders set to begin on September 17, and the release date to be September 28.

Xiaomi Global Smartphone Shipments Grew 58 Percent Year-on-Year: Strategy Analytics

Strategy Analytics has come out with its latest report on the global smartphone shipments and Xiaomi, for the first time in a year, has made it to the first five spots. During Q2 2017, Xiaomi’s global smartphone shipments grew 58 percent year-on-year to 23.2 million. Samsung managed to retain its top position in the list while Apple’s shipments also witnessed growth during the same time period. Separately, Chinese companies Oppo and Huawei also managed to deliver impressive figures during the second quarter of 2017.

Thanks to its range of Android smartphones including Redmi 4A, which is proving “wildly popular” in India, Xiaomi was able to capture 6 percent of global smartphone marketshare in Q2 2017, as per the report by Strategy Analytics. The analytics firm says that the company was able to snatch volumes from other competitors such as Micromax and Lenovo in the country.

“Xiaomi has bounced back since ex-Google exec, Hugo Barra, quit the company earlier this year and Xiaomi will be hoping the current momentum can be sustained into the second half of 2017,” Strategy Analytics said.

Unsurprisingly, with 79.5 million smartphone shipments, 2 percent up year-on-year, Samsung retained the top spot on the list. “Samsung continued its recovery from last year’s Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco, lifted by robust demand for the new Galaxy S8 portfolio with an innovative bezel-less design,” Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, was quoted as saying in the report. Mawston further said that the rumoured Galaxy Note 8 with a bigger screen will further strengthen Samsung in the upcoming weeks.

Xiaomi Global Smartphone Shipments Grew 58 Percent Year-on-Year: Strategy AnalyticsWhile Apple’s global smartphone shipments grew year-on-year to 41 million, the Cupertino-based company’s market share came down to 11 percent from 12 percent in the same time period a year ago. “Apple’s iPhone has gone out of fashion in China and this is placing a cap on its worldwide performance. Attention will now turn to Apple’s rumored iPhone 8 introduction later this year and whether its tenth-anniversary flagship model will be different or exciting enough to ignite a rebound in iPhone volumes for the important Q4 2017 Western holiday season,” Mawsten said.

Huawei and Oppo managed to deliver 38.4 million and 29.5 million shipments to get third and fourth spots on the list respectively during Q2 2017. With help from popular Android smartphones such as the P10 and Mate 9, Huawei managed to gain more market share and is even closing-in on Apple in terms of shipment numbers, Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics said.

Oppo also managed to deliver an increase of 64 percent year-on-year in terms of global smartphone shipments during the second quarter of 2017 with impressive performance in markets including China, India, and Europe, as per the report.

Talking about the overall global smartphone shipments, Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments grew a solid 6 percent annually from 341.5 million units in Q2 2016 to 360.4 million in Q2 2017. The global smartphone market has settled into a steady rhythm of single-digit growth this year, driven by first-time buyers across emerging markets like Africa and upgrades to flagship Android models in developed regions such as Western Europe.
