  • Intel has announced two new Atom SoCs – E3900 & A3900
  • The E3900 SoCs will power Internet of Things devices
  • The A3900 SoCs will power in-vehicle infotainment and more

Intel on Tuesday launched two processors in its new Atom 3900 lineup – the E3900 and A3900. The former is meant for IoT applications and wearables, while the latter is meant for smart auto apps. Intel is pushing hard to grab the connected device market by launching next generation Atom SoC that are ‘exceptionally capable of delivering on performance, processing and scalability’.

Intel’s Atom processor E3900 series will particularly focus on decentralised computing infrastructure on multiple applications and devices, also known as fog computing. The chip series is powered by quad-core processors clocked at up to 2.5GHz. The E3900 SoC series also features Intel’s 9th generation graphics engine that is said to have a 2.9 times better than the previous generation, and supports as many as three independent display screens. The E3900 series has four vector image processing units, that are claimed to provide better visibility, quality video in low light, noise reduction, colour, and detailed maintenance.

The E3900 processor series also comes with Intel’s Time Coordinated Computing Technology that coordinates and synchronises peripherals and networks inside the system on a chip (SoC) of connected devices. Intel says that ‘E3900 series is a significant step toward building a more robust IoT ecosystem.’The A3900 processor series is aimed to power the next-generation of in-vehicle experiences. Intel says SoC will enable a complete software defined cockpit solution that includes in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), digital instrument clusters, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The A3900 series will allow car manufacturers to employ new technologies packed in Intel’s new SoC. Intel’s A3900 series will be available only after Q1 2017 to customers.

Apart from the new SoCs, Intel is progressing further to tie up with more manufactures, OEM partners and software makers like Delphi, Hikvision, FAW, Neusoft among others. Intel recently acquired Movidius in a close to $400 million deal to boost its computer vision division. Intel has been seeing a decline in its PC sales, and hence, the company has been looking for success in other domains, such as cloud computing, data centres, IoT devices, and more.

Optimizing your online content – three things you may not have thought of

You may think that once you have an online presence you can just sit back and watch it work for you but you could not be more wrong. It’s important to remember that you are competing in a global market place so you cannot afford to be complacent. If you do not optimise your online content you run the risk of people becoming disinterested in what you have to tell them or show them.

It’s important that you start to engage people as soon as they visit your website. This means that you have to tell them what you want them to know, quickly and succinctly. Of course, it also helps if the design of your website is uncluttered but attractive to the eye. We are going to take a look at three of the most important factors you should consider when you are optimizing your online content.

The importance of responsive web design

One of the most important features of any website is that it can be accessed using a mobile device. When you consider the number of people who use a smartphone or tablet to get online you can see why it’s vital that you do not miss out on such a large potential audience.

One of the best ways to ensure that you reach the mobile audience is to employ responsive web design. This type of design is based around the use of a fluid grid layout which enables website content to fit to any size of screen. If you have not thought about using responsive web design previously maybe it’s time you gave it a try.

Improving sales using online magazines

If you want your product or service to stand out against the myriad of others you are competing against you need to provide your potential customers with useful information in an easy to access and memorable way. This is why online magazines are such an excellent idea. They are also easy to produce.

All you have to do is upload the PDF file you have created to the online software you have chosen. Then you just click to convert the content into a glossy magazine that catches the eye of people reading and makes them more likely to make a purchase from you. Check out more information about creating an online magazine and you will see how easy it is to do.

Adopting the F-layout for your website

Have you ever heard of the F-layout when it comes to web design? It’s actually a popular website design technique that has been shown to be as effective for mobile devices as it is for desktops. The idea is that people start reading a website from the top left hand corner down. For this reason it makes sense to place the information you afford more importance to in that position.

If you put this website design technique into practice it should mean that people get to see the most important information you have for them while they are most alert and interested. If you engage with website visitors right from the start they are more likely to make a purchase from you at some point.

All of these techniques are useful if you want to attract more people to your online content, and retain their interest. Why not give one or more of them a try?

‘Mobile Tower Emissions Well Within Limits in India,’ Says DoT Secretary

'Mobile Tower Emissions Well Within Limits in India,' Says DoT Secretary

Electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions from mobile towers in the country are much below the strict norms enforced by the Department of Telecom (DoT), a senior officer said in Chandigarh on Friday.

“There is no scientific evidence backing the claim that EMF radiation from mobile towers, which are below the safe limits prescribed by the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), can cause adverse health effects,” said DoT Secretary J.S. Deepak.

Deepak was addressing a gathering at an event organised in the capital to spread awareness about emissions from mobile towers.

“The DoT has already prescribed strict precautionary norms for exposure limit for the Radio Frequency Field (Base Station Emissions), which is 10 times more stringent than the existing limits prescribed by ICNIRP and recommended by WHO,” he said.

He maintained: “Our EMF norms are much stricter than what is followed by many developed nations, including the US, the UK and most parts of the European Union. The government has taken adequate steps to ensure that telecom service providers strictly adhere to these prescribed norms.”

Telecom towers are critical installations on which the backbone of wireless communications rest and unfounded apprehensions around EMF emissions and mobile towers have the potential to derail our growth story, Deepak pointed out.

DoT Deputy Director General R.M. Chaturvedi said that the WHO has referred to approximately 25,000 studies, conducted around the world over the past 30 years, and current evidences do not confirm existence of any health consequences from exposure to low-level electromagnetic fields.

“A committee, formed at the behest of the Allahabad High Court, comprising experts from five IITs, AIIMS (Delhi), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, has also on the basis of scientific evidence, studies and reports available, found that there is no conclusive evidence about the stated dangers of EMF radiation from mobile BTS towers,” Chaturvedi added.

Several high courts, including the high courts of Punjab and Haryana, Madras, Kerala, Gujarat and Allahabad, in cases related to issue of effects of radiation from cellphone towers have given judgements and dismissed petitions, where the mobile tower installations were challenged in various localities, including residential, on grounds of health effects of EMF radiation, it was pointed out at the awareness programme.

Health experts Dr. Suresh Attili from Grace Cancer Foundation and Dr. T.K. Joshi, Advisor to Ministry of Health endorsed the fact that scientific studies have not been able to conclude that EMF emissions from mobile towers can cause health hazards.

China Overtakes US to Become Top Spender in Apple’s App Store

China Overtakes US to Become Top Spender in Apple's App Store: App Annie

  • The Chinese mostly spend on games, report says
  • Pokemon Go was the most downloaded gaming app worldwide
  • Apple recently opened two R&D centres in China

With the largest population in the world, there’s almost an air of inevitability about China coming to hold some records. Outpacing the United States, China has become the world’s largest market for Apple’s App Store in terms of revenue.

A new report released by App Annie says that China contributed an impressive $1.7 billion (roughly Rs. 11,376 crores) in revenue to the App Store in Q3 2016, which is 15 percent more than the USA. The report adds that the US had been the top market in terms of App Store revenue since 2010. The report also adds that the Chinese are spending over 5 times more than what they were spending just two years ago. China will catapult the largest App Store absolute revenue growth for any country by 2020, says the report.

“While revenue from Games accounts for the majority of revenue generated in China, other prominent categories like Entertainment and Social Networking are making strides and have more than tripled in the past year,” the report explains. “Video streaming apps in China have had a major impact on the Entertainment category as a whole, and include further integrations into traditional cable spaces with investments in smart TV and original content.”

App subscriptions have incrementally raised the revenue for China, making its gross App Store revenues higher than the US and Japan as well. The US currently stands second on the revenue chart with $1.5 billion (roughly Rs. 10,038 crores) while the third position is taken by Japan with $1.2 billion (roughly Rs. 8,030 crores). Last year’s third quarter had US at the top with $1 billion and Japan tailing behind with $800 million, while China was third.

Youku, QQ, Inke, and other mobile streaming apps have garnered higher revenues for the Chinese iOS app market, while Netflix soared high in the US and Japan. It’s no surprise that Pokemon Go shattered all records for downloads back when it launched. China too has shown its craze for the game with about $600 million revenue clocked in the mainland alone.

Recently, Apple opened two research & development centres in two major cities of China to bolster ties with the country. China’s digital market is important for Apple and it has been tirelessly making efforts to grab increased share of the market.

Samsung Galaxy On Nxt Price Will Be Around Rs. 18,000 – Flipkart’s Big Reveal at 8pm

Samsung Galaxy On Nxt Price Will Be Around Rs. 18,000 - Flipkart's Big Reveal at 8pm
Samsung Galaxy On Nxt is not a placeholder name
The smartphone will be Flipkart exclusive
It will be a notch above the Galaxy J7 (2016) in Samsung’s lineup
While everyone awaits the big Samsung Galaxy On Nxt reveal at 8pm, some new information about the upcoming smartphone has come to light. While it had earlier seemed that Flipkart was using the ‘Nxt’ moniker as sort of a placeholder for another smartphone whose name it did not want to reveal, it seems the truth has been hiding in plain sight the whole time.

The next Samsung Galaxy On smartphone to launch in the country is indeed called Samsung Galaxy On Nxt and it will be Flipkart exclusive, the latter bit having already been confirmed by the two companies on Wednesday. Further, Gadgets 360 has learnt from its sources that the smartphone will be priced around the Rs. 18,000 mark. While we are still awaiting details about the exact specifications of the Samsung Galaxy On Nxt, we can reveal that it will be similar to the popular Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016), with some improvements, specifically with regards to the SoC and RAM inside the Galaxy On Nxt.
Those specifications should be no surprise given the expected price range of the Samsung Galaxy On Nxt. The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) launched in India carrying a price tag of Rs. 13,990, while the J7 (2016) was priced at Rs. 15,990 at launch – the Galaxy On Nxt will slot in right above them in terms of price as well as specifications.

Flipkart has been building up to the reveal of the Samsung Galaxy On Nxt at 8pm later today, and all the details should become official pretty soon.

Nintendo NX Revealed as Nintendo Switch, Confirmed for March 2017

Nintendo NX Revealed as Nintendo Switch, Confirmed for March 2017

  • The Nintendo NX is called the Nintendo Switch
  • It has detachable controllers and is a handheld and home console hybrid
  • March 2017 is its release month, no price has been confirmed yet

After months of rumour and speculation, Nintendo has finally lifted the lid on its latest console, codenamed as the Nintendo NX. It will be sold as the Nintendo Switch.

A trailer from Nintendo showed off games such as Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild, Mario Kart, Skyrim, NBA, and what appears to be a new Mario game. Needless to say, previous leaks about it being a handheld and home console hybrid are correct. The video showed off a black and grey console with detachable controllers. For now, there’s no exact release date save for the video ending with “coming soon March 2017”.

No price has been mentioned just yet. Safe to say, it will be in striking range of what reports from last week anticipated.

“A long-in-the-works revamp to the company’s consoles — the NX, with reveal coming next week — is liable to come at a price that will result in a “major” disappointment for volume sales, the firm [Macquarie] says,” according to a post on investor website Seeking Alpha. “Speculation is putting the price of the new console between $300 and $350, in line with competing consoles, vs. the Wii’s former discount to rival boxes from Sony and Microsoft.”

“With this first look at Nintendo Switch, I hope fans are already imagining the possibilities of having the freedom to play when, where, and how they want to,” said Satoru Shibata, president of Nintendo of Europe in a prepared statement. “Our teams at Nintendo, and many other developers, are all working hard to create new and unique experiences, and we look forward to showing you more.”

Tesla’s Autopilot Feature Is Getting Some Unwanted Attention in Germany

Tesla's Autopilot Feature Is Getting Some Unwanted Attention in Germany

Germany is warning owners of Tesla vehicles that the use of the Autopilot function in their electric cars requires the driver’s unrestricted attention at all times.

The Federal Motor Authority told Tesla owners in a letter that the Autopilot function is purely a driver assistance system and not a highly-automated vehicle that can be operated without the driver’s constant attention.

Under German road traffic regulations, the driver is required to remain alert and in control of the vehicle at all times when using the system, the letter adds.

Tesla’s Autopilot, introduced last October, helps drivers steer and stay in lane and is intended to assist – but not replace – drivers. Tesla says it has always made clear that Autopilot is a driver assistance system that requires the driver to pay attention at all times.

But it has been the focus of intense scrutiny since a Tesla Model S driver was killed while using the technology in a May 7 collision with a truck in Florida.

Germany’s Transport Ministry is conducting studies into the Autopilot function on Tesla’s Model S electric car. An internal report seen by magazine Der Spiegel called the function a “considerable traffic hazard.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 Reveal Teased By Rockstar Games?

Red Dead Redemption 2 Reveal Teased By Rockstar Games?

  • GTA V developer Rockstar Games teased a new Red Dead game
  • An official announcement could be made soon
  • It is unclear if this new game would come to PC, the last one did not

Red Dead Redemption was one of the best games on the PS3 and Xbox 360, also notorious for being the rare title not to make it to PC. And while the game has been available on the Xbox One via backwards compatibility and the first game in the series, Red Dead Revolver, re-released on the PS4 as a PS2 classic, it seems like another game is in the offing.

Reason being, Rockstar Games has changed its social media profiles to reflect the stills and backgrounds from the opening credits of Red Dead Redemption (pictured above). Many assume this to be a sign of an impending game announcement in the series. In the past Rockstar Games’ publisher Take-Two claimed it was crucial series. CEO Strauss Zelnick noted Red Dead among the company’s “permanent franchises” at the Cowen and Company’s Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in 2014.

“It’s obvious that GTA is a permanent franchise as long as we keep delivering this incredible quality; it seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise, again with the same caveat,” he said at the time. The Rockstar Games-developed series has two entries: 2004’s Red Dead Revolver and 2010’s Red Dead Redemption. The CEO’s statement seemed to hint that another Red Dead game is on the way.

Rockstar has been no stranger to announcing games on social media – Twitter in particular, it did something similar with GTA V. Considering that a new game in the Red Dead series was rumoured to be the final game at Sony’s E3 2016 conference as well as a slew of reports regarding a possible sequel prior to E3 lend credence to this. More so than a remaster. Nonetheless hopefully we wouldn’t have to wait too long for Rockstar to announce whatever its teasing.

Europe Heads to Mars in Search of Life

Europe Heads to Mars in Search of Life

Thirteen years after its first, failed attempt to place a rover on Mars, Europe reaches a crucial stage Sunday in a fresh quest to scour the Red Planet for signs of life, this time with Russia.

Mission controllers will instruct a spacecraft about 175 million kilometres (109 million miles) from Earth to release and steer a paddling pool-sized lander towards the Red Planet’s cold, dry surface.

Scheduled to arrive next Wednesday (October 19), the short-lived lander’s sole purpose is to prepare the way for a subsequent rover which will drill into Mars in search of extra-terrestrial life.

“Our goal here is to prove we can get to the surface, do science, take data,” European Space Agency (ESA) science advisor Mark McCaughrean said ahead of Sunday’s lander-release manoeuvres.

Dubbed Schiaparelli, the 600-kilogramme (1,300-pound) lander will separate from its mothership, the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), after a seven-month, 496 million-kilometre (308 million-mile) trek from Earth.

The lander and the TGO – which will enter into orbit around Mars to sniff its atmosphere for gases excreted by living organisms – comprise the first phase of the joint European-Russian ExoMars project.

The second phase, due for launch in 2020 after a two-year funding delay, is the ExoMars rover, for which Schiaparelli will be testing entry and soft-landing technology.

More than half of US, Russian and European attempts to land and operate craft on the Martian surface since the 1960s have failed.

The last time Europe tried, the British-built Beagle 2 disappeared without a trace after separating from the Mars Express mothership in December 2003.

It was finally spotted in January 2015 in a Nasa picture of Mars. It showed that even though Beagle 2 failed to establish contact, it had successfully landed.

What’s making the methane?
The United States is alone in having successfully operated rovers on Mars. If there is life on Mars, it is unlikely to be found on the surface, which is bombarded by ultraviolet and cosmic rays.

But scientists say traces of methane in Mars’ thin atmosphere may be an indicator of something stirring underground. Methane also does not survive the Sun’s ultraviolet rays for long, McCaughrean explained.

“And so for it actually to exist in the Martian atmosphere, it must be coming from something. Something must be making methane.” One possible source is underground volcanoes. Another is life: single-celled microbes called methanogens, which on Earth live in places without oxygen such as animal stomachs, where they convert carbon dioxide into methane.

It is hoped that the ExoMars rover – equipped to drill two-metres (six feet) below the surface – will yield some clues as to the provenance of Mars’ methane. In the meantime, Schiaparelli’s exploits will be crucial in designing the rover’s landing gear.

The lander will separate from the TGO around 1430 GMT on Sunday, about a million kilometres (621,000 miles) from the Red Planet. It will enter the atmosphere on Wednesday at an altitude of some 121 kilometres and a speed of nearly 21,000 kilometres (13,000 miles) per hour.

The hot and bumpy trip through Mars’ atmosphere will take six minutes. To protect the lander, an “aeroshell” will absorb and dissipate the heat generated by atmospheric drag for the first three or four minutes.

When it has reached an altitude of 11 kilometres and slowed to 1,700 km/hr, a supersonic parachute will be deployed, the ESA said.

After slowing further and jettisoning its shell and parachute, Schiaparelli will activate nine speed-control thrusters. It will briefly hover at an altitude of two metres before cutting its engines and falling to the surface. The impact is meant to be absorbed by a crushable structure in the lander’s belly – similar to a car’s crumple zone.

“It is a complex mission,” Thierry Blancquaert, ESA’s Schiaparelli manager, told AFP. “Landing on Mars requires a lot of technology.”

With a 10-minute delay – the time it takes for a message to reach Earth – Schiaparelli will send data on temperature, humidity, density profile and electrical properties.

Battery-driven and without solar panels, the lander should last for two or three days.

“Even if it does not work, we will gain a lot of information,” said Michel Denis, ExoMars flight director. “If something goes wrong, we will know what it was.”

After releasing Schiaparelli, the TGO will change course to avoid crashing into Mars. It will then start a 12-month process of “aerobraking” – skimming the Martian atmosphere to bleed off energy — to change its eccentric orbit into a circular one.

In early 2018, it will start analysing Mars’ atmosphere from an altitude of about 400 kilometres. If Sunday’s separation fails, mission controllers can try again on Monday.
